Case study - Uno

A Carmarthen-based homeware and giftware shop, Uno was launched in 2005 by ex senior logistics manager, Jonathan Faull. Uno now carries some 16,000 items across approximately 6,000 product lines, and Jonathan is planning the development of further outlets. Early on in the planning stages, he recognised that an effective IT solution would be vital to the success of his business. After researching various VARs, Jonathan chose Nisyst, specialist in touchscreen-based solutions for retail, to provide a complete point of sale solution.

Despite much competition, it was Nisyst that demonstrated the most impressive modular touchscreen terminals, running NPoS, the company’s highly flexible core software. The key features which attracted Jonathan were the system’s blend of reliability, functionality, elegant appearance and ease-of-use. In terms of PoS hardware, he opted for two networked Epson MR-800 intelligent terminals, and installed one on each floor of the Carmarthen store.

Providing full PoS facilities, the Nisyst solution offered everything required by Uno. Shortly after implementation, the system was put to the Christmas-trading test. “We opened in mid-November,” commented Jonathan, “and the combination of being a new shop coupled with the Christmas period led to a lot of pressure – both on the tills and the operators. But the system is so fast and simple to use, and so well geared to our needs, that we had no problems at all. In fact, we’ve had no problems since the system was installed.”

So impressed is Jonathan with the EPoS solution, that it is to play a large role in his plans for expansion. “Although we use the PoS and barcoding elements of the system, as well as some stock interrogation, we’re using only a relatively small amount of its capability. As we grow, there will be a need to use much more of its potential, such as stock and warehouse management, and it’s then that we’ll really benefit from its power and scalability. Having a system which can grow incrementally with you is a major advantage.”
